Ruby red in colour, complex mix of aromas, long ageing, Villa dei Misteri wine is the result of the rebirth of viticulture in ancient Pompeii.
A history of two thousand years, which came back to life twenty years ago, when the plaster casts of the ancient Roman plant revealed the cultivated species, the farming methods, the exact location of the vineyards. Thus was born the idea of replanting the vines where possible and it began near the amphitheater. Over the years, the surface recovered for viticulture has reached one and a half hectares, in fifteen plots located in Regiones I and II, where the new vines have been planted exactly where the casts have indicated the existence of the Roman ones. It began with two ancient vines, Piedirossoand Sciascinoso, to which Aglianico was later added, vinified for the first time together with the other grapes in 2007. Even the breeding takes place as in ancient times, with the help of poles for the first two vines and the traditional Greek sapling pruning for the Aglianico.
So every year, in October, it is harvest time from the Forum Boarium to the House of the Summer Triclinium, from the Garden of the Fugitives to the Caupona del Gladiatore, from the Caupona di Eusino to the Domus of the Nave Europa. Limited quantity, but great quality, the production of Pompeii is around 1500 bottles a year of an appreciated IGT, which is marketed after several years of aging, helping to finance new restorations. And also thanks to the vineyards, the landscape of Pompeii returns to life as it was before that tragic day in 79 AD.
