Trees are present everywhere in Cilento. The white fig of Cilento IGP is a real typical delight.
The Greeks spread the generous tree in the 6th century, but the Romans were also greedy for its sweet figs. From Agropoli to Bussento, today there are 68 Municipalities in whose countryside trees of the Dottato cultivar are scattered.
The fruits, after being subjected to drying, mostly natural in the sun, show a characteristic white skin. At that point they are ready for various traditional processes: covered in sugar or dark chocolate, dipped in rum and “'mbuttunati”, filled with almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts and citrus peel, or "fenced" in pairs.
